Adding a water feature: placement, scale and sound

A water feature turns a garden from a space you look at into a space you feel. The three decisions that matter: placement, scale, and the sound you want.
Placement: where the water works
Near seating or an entry point where you'll actually hear it. Avoid corners where the pump hum echoes — and give it a backdrop (wall, hedge or plant) so it reads as intentional.
Scale: bigger than you think
Features get visually 'lost' outdoors. A common mistake is choosing too small. As a rule of thumb, a freestanding feature should be roughly 1/3 the height of its background wall.
Sound: what you're actually buying
Whispering Rock gives a soft, natural trickle; Glass Wave is a clean, modern sheet of water; Mirror Spring is near-silent for a meditative look. Match the sound to the mood of the space.
Power and maintenance
Most features run on a low-voltage pump — plan a weatherproof outlet within reach. Winter: drain or protect the pump to avoid frost damage.
