Planning a Melbourne outdoor kitchen — a practical checklist
Aug 2026 · 6 min read · by the MEG Outdoor Living team
An outdoor kitchen is a build, not a purchase. Get these decisions right before you commit and it'll serve you for fifteen years.
1. Position: wind, smoke and service runs
Put the cooktop away from prevailing winds, and keep the kitchen within reach of water and power service runs — trenching costs add up fast.
2. Sink side: left, right — or centre
Think about your workflow: prep left-to-right or right-to-left? Our BBQ modules come with a sink that can be installed to the left or right of the cooktop; the Range series also offers a centre-positioned sink for symmetrical layouts.
3. Benchtop material
Match the benchtop to your climate and budget — options across our range suit everything from low-maintenance surfaces to premium stone-look finishes.
4. Door panels and cabinetry
Choose door panel materials that resist UV and moisture — the same material that protects your cabinetry in summer sun. We offer a selection of door finishes across the Range, Sunset, Stockyard, Abode, Flame and Paddock modules.
5. Approvals and shelter
If the kitchen sits under a pergola or alfresco roof, confirm local council requirements and check the roof can take the weight. If it's freestanding, plan for a weatherproof cover.
Tell us your layout and we'll spec the right module — including sink position, benchtop and door finishes.
