Stone Paving
Travertine vs bluestone vs granite: choosing paving stone in VIC
Aug 2026 · 6 min read · by the MEG Outdoor Living team
Stone paving is a 20+ year decision. The four families we supply each behave differently under Melbourne's climate and traffic — here's how to pick.
Travertine — the warm, classic paver
Ivory, Silver and Tuscan travertine in 40+ formats from 406x406 tiles to pool coping and stepping stones. Travertine is naturally porous — filled-honed finishes feel smooth and contemporary; unfilled-tumbled suits a rustic, old-world look. Best for patios, pool surrounds and entertaining areas.
Bluestone — the Australian workhorse
Euro Premium and Harkaway bluestone: 40+ formats from 500x500 up to 1800x350 slabs, French pattern and crazy paving. Dense, hard-wearing and quietly premium — the default choice for driveways, paths and classic Melbourne homes.
Limestone — soft colour, refined texture
Capri White, Shell White, Tundra Grey and others in 40+ formats. Softer, lighter and more uniform than bluestone. Suits contemporary architecture and coastal projects.
Granite — the dense, low-maintenance option
Dove White, Raven Grey, Midnight and Smokey Quartz in 25+ formats with bullnose and rebate options. Extremely dense and slip-resistant — for driveways and high-traffic entries.
Basalt — the accent stone
Crazy paving, riven, cat paw pavers and steppers. Hard-wearing and characterful, ideal for stepping-stone paths.
